“When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.”
Somehow these three words have changed the trajectory of millions of lives. It is finished.
Have you ever stopped to think about what was “finished”? Was it Jesus’ life? He had just breathed his last breath. Was it Jesus’ mission on Earth? Check that off. Was it the pain and suffering he had endured that day? It was a mighty burden to bare. Was it this movement that had just started that was finished? Remember, we have the rest of the story. Those who were there with Jesus and at the crucifixion scene did not. The resurrection is still to come! Sunday is still a few days away. It was all of this and so much more!
The “so much more” is this: It is finished. He finished the battle between good and evil. He finished the battle between brokeness and wholeness. He finished the battle between sin and forgiveness. He finished the battle between death and life. He finished the battle between separation from God and relationship with God. He finished the battle between our fight to be good and the fact that he makes us righteous.
It is finished is for anyone who is suffering, who is doubting, who is broken, who is hurting, who is walking in sin, who is fighting to be “good enough”, for anyone who still doubts they can make it to eternity, for anyone who struggles with bondage or addiction, for anyone who can’t seem to be whole: It is Finished! Even though the resurrection is still to come, just the simple statement of: It is Finished, tells us we can be made whole again.
My prayer if that if you are reading this and there are things in your life that you are stuggling with, know this, It Is Finished! I pray that even in the dark times you would know that you have a Jesus that loves you more than you know, and because he, not only said it, but actually accomplished it: It is Finished!
Sunday is coming!
