“So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.””
The next few days or weeks, depending on where the Spirit leads, see what I did there, we will be spending time discussing and meditating on this: What is the Holy Spirit and why does it matter?
I want to start out this thread by writing, the Holy Spirit is more than we know and more important than we treat her.
Everything in the life of a follower of Christ starts here. Everything in the life of a Christ follower starts with the Holy Spirit.
In this moment in Act 1, the disciples are waiting for power. They are waiting for the time they thought this whole journey had been about. They were waiting on the pay off. They thought, “this is it, it’s our time”. We will now overthrow the oppressive Roman government. This is our time! Then right there in front of them, Jesus gives them all the information they need about power, and then he’s gone! The ascension. Jesus was taken up in a cloud of smoke right in front of their faces. What happens next was typical disciple stuff. Well, if I’m being honest, it would’ve been my go to move after spending three years with this guy I thought was leading a revolution. This guy who had died, risen again, and then just vanished in a puff of smoke. What did they do? They ran and hid!
Jesus had given them everything they needed to know about the shift of power and they ran and hid. We know if we keep reading that in Acts 2 the Holy Spirit is poured out and everything changes.
I do believe that far too often in this day and age, TODAY, we have questions for Jesus. Even today, he gives us the same answer: “You are given power in the Holy Spirit”. We then do the same thing the disciples do, we run and hide. We are waiting for Jesus to do something huge to shift the power struggle. Then he says, “I have given you all you need in the Holy Spirit”, and we run and hide. My hope over the next few posts is that we can journey into the world of Holy Spirit living and realize Jesus has given us a gift: The Holy Spirit. This gift is amazing! This gift empowers us to do amazing things today in our world! Take some time today to reflect on these three things:
1. Take time today and pray that God would reveal himself to you fresh and new!
2. Pray the Holy Spirit would come and empower your life in a way that you have never experienced.
3. Ask for understanding about the complexities of the Holy Spirit that you have never understood.
